Gynaecomastia Correction

Gynaecomastia, also known as “male breast enlargement”, is an uncommon condition which can be corrected with surgery. The extra tissue is usually a combination of fat and glandular tissue. If it is mainly fatty tissue, then liposuction alone can help, but often a cut around the nipple is needed to remove the firmer glandular breast tissue.

About The Procedure

The surgery leaves scars although these usually become inconspicuous over time. The larger the breasts, the more extensive the surgery that is required.

This procedure is normally safe, and the results are fairly predictable with an immediately improved appearance. The recovery is relatively pain free.

The surgery is usually performed under general anaesthetic, either as a day case or with a one-night hospital stay. The procedure normally takes approximately one and a half hours, and I use a combination of liposuction and open excision of glandular breast tissue in most cases. The wounds are closed with dissolvable stitches and covered with waterproof dressings to allow you to shower regularly.

After The Procedure

After the surgery you should be relatively pain free, but you may need some simple painkillers. Some numbness in the breast (and particularly the nipple) may be noticed for the first few months after surgery. Hypersensitivity can also occur, but both usually settle down in time.

Gynaecomastia correction is a relatively straightforward procedure, but as with any surgery, there are certain risks and complications. These include bleeding, infection, sensory changes, adverse scarring, and asymmetry.
